Glorious Italian Says Chicago Magazine November Issue 2000 Out in the western ‘burbs, Elmwood Park is headquarters for all things Italian, especially if they are edible. Our favorite spot is Jim and Pete’s, a neighborly double store front full of Chianti bottles, family photos, and Dino, Frankie, and Tony singing their hearts out. The owners are cousins who grew up in the biz (it’s been in the family since the forties), so they know how to do things up right. This means garlic, red pepper, and Parmesan-zapped olive oil for bread dunking, wine in juice glasses, and long simmered sauces. Portions are expectedly Colosseum-sized, and only two dishes top $12. Try marinara over mannicotti, tortellini, mostacoli, or just about anything else ending in an “i.” Pairing noodles with juicy grilled suasage can’t hurt. Our waitress warns us not to leave without tasting the fried bread. Glad to oblige, as the puffy, sugar-dusted, boxing-glove-size slabs are a KO.
